The most extreme planets ever discovered.

Scientists have recently discovered the hottest planet ever discovered, whose temperature is higher than that of many stars. As the search for planets that are outside our solar system advances, we are discovering several other planets with surprising characteristics. Get to know the seven most extreme planets ever discovered.

The hottest

The planets Mercury – closest to the sun – and Venus are the hottest of the known, having respectively 430°C and 461°C (mainly because of the greenhouse effect) while the sun reaches 5500°C. But this is nowhere near the hottest planet ever discovered: the KELT-9b, which reaches no less than 4.3mil°C! Under these conditions, Mercury would melt and become a sea of lava.

The coldest

The planet named OGLE-2005-BLG-390Lb, also called Hoth in honor of the frozen planet of Star Wars, is the coldest ever discovered, it is about 5.5 times the size of the earth and its temperature is 50 degrees above absolute zero (-223°C), although not far from its star, the small mass of the red dwarf makes the temperature extremely low.

The biggest

When we study the Solar System we learn that the largest of the planets is Jupiter, possessing 2.5 times the mass of all the planets together. The planet known as DENIS-P J082303.1-491201 b has 28.5 times the mass of Jupiter! Because it is so large, scientists are doubtful about its classification, and may be considered a brown dwarf, which are stars large enough to begin a fusion process.

The smaller

The planet Kepler-37b is the smallest planet ever discovered. It is closer to the sun than the first planet in the Solar System, being smaller than Mercury and a little larger than the moon. It was discovered in 2013 and is located 210 light-years from Earth, its temperature is very similar to that of Mercury.

The oldest

The oldest known planet is PSR B1620-26 b is 12.5 billion years old – 1.3 billion more than the Universe and its mass is 2.5 times that of Jupiter. It is older than the orbiting stars: one of neutrons and one white dwarf.

The newest

Tauri b, this is the youngest known planet with only 2 million years and about ¾ of Jupiter mass, it orbits a star with the same mass of the Sun, but much larger. It is still in the process of formation, colliding with asteroids and other celestial bodies.

The worst weather

Venus is classified as the planet with the worst climate and is located in our own Solar System. It is about the same size as Earth and is wrapped in clouds that cause sulfuric acid rain and an atmosphere that moves much faster than its rotation, generating cyclones of more than 360km/h. The Venus atmosphere is almost 100 times heavier than Earth’s and is made up of 95% carbon dioxide.
